iPhone OS 3.0 Internet Tethering (How To Enable)

Thursday, Mar 19, 2009, 12:31 pm | In General

Disclaimer

BIG BOLD NOTE BEFORE TRYING THIS: This (very simple) guide is for those who are in the United States and on AT&T. (Basically non hacked, legit iPhones that have been correctly and legally upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0 through the developer program. ALSO: Please do not yell/hate/twitterhate/complain/spam me about this not working for you, it worked for me, and I think the process is pretty standard as long as you have AT&T, are on a legit iPhone plan and are running 3.0

Steps

  1. Plug your iPhone into your Mac (I assume this works the same on PCs, but I only use Macs, so your milage may vary.
  2. Download this file: http://thejakemarsh.com/ATT_US.ipcc.zip, and unzip, put it somewhere easy to find, like your Downloads or Desktop folder.
  3. Go into iTunes, select your iPhone in the Source List on the left.
  4. Hold down the option key (that's the "alt/option" key) and click "Check For Updates" - you should get a file chooser dialog.
  5. Find the ATT_US.ipcc file on your harddrive (Wherever you downloaded and unzipped it to), select it and click open.
  6. You should see a progress dialog saying "Updating Carrier Settings..."
  7. Your iPhone may hang for a split second, but once its done, unlock your iPhone and go to "Settings > General > Network > Internet Tethering"
  8. Flip the slider to on.
  9. If you've done it correctly, your iPhone will momentarily disappear from the Source List in iTunes and a new "Network Interface" dialog will appear.
  10. Allow it to do its thing and if everything has gone according to plan, you should be able to disconnect from all other internet sources (Wifi, ethernet, etc) and still browse around and do whatever you like.

I haven't gotten it to successfully work over bluetooth yet, but if you wanted to try just pair your iPhone like any other mobile phone (using the "Bluetooth" panel in System Preferences) then click the cog icon, and click the "Connect to Network" option. I got an error every time I tried this, but it may work for you. Let me know

Please post your results in the comments as I'd like to find out as much as possible about all of this.

Thanks!

Oh and to entice you, here's some screenshots of it working :)

  7. Jake: it looks like you used the IPCC file from an earlier firmware version. i’m thinking that is why it disables the MMS functionality in the 3.0 beta after using your carrier update.

  8. Any chance you’re working on MMS for AT&T?

  9. It worked great for me until I disconnected and then tried using my iPhone to check my mail: Now I get an error saying “Could not activate cellular data network. You are not subscribed to a cellular data service” Phone and SMS still work fine. MMS never worked before anyways. it would hang at the end. Any suggestions before I do a full restore, because at this point reading my email is more important to me than tethering

  10. I was able to load the ipcc and I have the option to enable tethering. When I turn it on I get the message to enable bluetooth, I click cancel because i want to use USB. I have the phone plugged into my MacBook pro 10.5.6 and I get nothing.

    Any help?

  17. @Facebook User: its highly possible that you need the iPhone OS 3.0 SDK to make this work, I have it installed so I have no way to test without it.

  18. @ Jake Marsh : OK, i’ll install it then ;-) Afraid that it breaks things

  20. You must have the 3.0 SDK installed. It will not recognize the connection unless you install the 3.0 SDK then update your carrier settings in itunes.

  25. No need to restore… you can simply go into Settings -> Network -> Cellular Data Network menu and put the proper information in there:

    APN: wap.cingular
    Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
    Password: CINGULAR1

    * I don’t believe case matters at all, as I’m lazy and typed everything above in all caps, and my phone is working again.

Once you do that (you may have to turn the radio on and off), your network connection will work again, and tethering will continue to work as well.

    Comment by Jake Marsh — March 20th, 2009 at 11:39 am #

  26. This is the most coherent guide I’ve seen yet. I wanted to add two things:

    * Bluetooth will not work with newer Macs, like the most recently released MacBooks and MacBook Pros. That’s probably why you were (like I was) got an error message when trying to connect over Bluetooth. Older Macs, including my early-2008 iMac, can connect.

    * USB will only work if the 3.0 SDK is installed on the computer you’re trying to tether. I didn’t have the SDK installed on my MacBook, so I couldn’t figure out why the new network interface wasn’t being detected. So you’ll need to install the 3.0 SDK on any newer Mac that can’t tether over Bluetooth.

These were the two key missing pieces of information for me; maybe they’ll be helpful to someone else.

    Comment by Matt — March 20th, 2009 at 2:32 pm #

  27. Is there a list of other things people should know before attempting to tether? I’m wondering specfically if:
1.) Your iPhone can still be used AT ALL while tethered
2.) Your iPhone can access Internet or cellular services while tethered
3.) Your Internet service can use all popular ports for things like: HTTP, iChat, Adium, LogMeIn, GoToMyPc, etc.

If anyone knows, it’d be great to hear. It looks like a powerful and elegant solution by Apple. I’ve had very little patience with anything else up to this point. I hope AT&T lowers the standard price on tethering to something reasonable like $10-$20. They’d make it up in volume for certain.

  33. Hi,
I wonder, would it be possible to make a different tethering file, let’s say for example an orange_slovakia ipcc one. The things is, that i’ve already tried this. Have a legit 3.0 signed through a developer, works fine, but there are two things that i’d like to see on it. That’s tethering and MMS, as both of these i don’t see. For the MMS: i can turn it on tough, but the moment i want to send one, the little camera icon in the messages app just isn’t there. I’ve seen that some have overcome this predicament by updating their carrier settings via an ipcc file, but, as i’ve said, there’s only a handful i’ve seen. Maybe I should have looked more. If you have some thoughts and ideas, don’t let them rest. Please write back or post. Thanks.

  43. Ok …didnt see all the questions.

At first i couldnt get this working at all. On a mac i still cant get it to show up as a network adapter, but when you pair it bluetooth it instantly works.

On my PC in in vista in my network connections i have the dial up, i have the local i have the wifi and i have a bluetooth. i just rightclicked and searched for bluetooth conenctions. it saw my phone and i paired it up. it gave me an ip address and i just went out onto the internet. I dont know if you have too but I also disabled the wifi, land line and dial up.

on xp i still cant get it to pair… i acctually think there might be a bug in the release or a glitch as when my phone tries to pair it instantly says it timed out and after 2 tries the iphone screen only goes to HALF of the qwerty keyboard visable. yet tye keys are still there you cant see them.

I dont have any further info….
If anyone has anymore sdk 3.0 beta slots. I would rather enjoy one more for futher testing. please let me know at vxeel@hotmail.com

  45. Update: Booted Windows Vista on bootcamp, added device via bluetooth, connected via Bluetooth PAN, worked flawlessly. I’ve got the older MAC Book though so you know.

    Comment by Hank — April 1st, 2009 at 11:13 am #

  46. Ok, Ok one more update just cause I know that people have been having problems. In the previous update I got Inet Tethering to work on Windows Vista over a MAC Book. That bothered me cause it was simply using PAN. Ok so back on the MAC OS X 10.4.9. Bluetooth PAN would never show connected when I chose the iphone then connect to network. So, back in Network preferences the little plus sign toward the bottom of the list of network devices, add a second bluetooth PAN device, shows up as Bluetooth PAN 2. It will say no IP address, Hit apply. If your connected to your iphone, disconnect it, if your iphone gets stuck on tethering when its really not, off then on bluetooth. Ok so your back disconnected all around with your iphone paired up but not connected, under the bluetooth icon on the MAC (top right) go to iphone then connect to network. BAM your connected, got out no problem. notice in network preferences that bluetooth PAN 2 connects right up.

    Comment by David Mok — April 8th, 2009 at 5:01 pm #

  49. If you go into your user folder > Library > iTunes > iPhone Carrier Support. There maybe an att_us.ipcc file with a modified date earlier than when you applied the newer att_us.ipcc file to turn on tethering. If you have this file, apply this as an update through iTunes using the Option Key + Check for Update button. This restore your original carrier settings and get voicemail to work again.

    Comment by Travis — June 10th, 2009 at 9:20 am #

  64. @ Travis:

You have to use a pre-release version of iTunes 8.2 to select custom/modded ipcc’s. If you’re already activated and running with 3.0, just uninstall all traces of iTunes 8.2 and install a pre-release version that you can find on a torrent site or whatnot. Then go through the steps again. You might have to enter your carrier settings under the Cellular Data Network in Settings on your phone as mentioned above.

I am not sure if you’ll get a big bill from AT&T for enabling tethering. I’ll have to poke through my .ipcc file and make sure that the APN settings are the normal wap.cingular settings and it shouldn’t be a problem.

at first I thought it was fishy, so I didn’t put an email in and selected my carrier (US AT&T) and hit download. It will install a profile (like airplane mode) that will enable tethering. It didn’t work the first time since I did not enter my email.

make sure you use your itunes email, otherwise it won’t setup the profile right

  74. I got it to show but then it disappears, my internet sharing button under settings/general. I have the 3.0 and the newest iTunes installed. I show the camera icon in my mms but upon trying to send a message it does not go through. I worked around that by emailing to phone# @whatever mms service address is. Exp. 314*******@mms.att.net

Why does the internet sharing button keep disappearing and once I plug the usb into my laptop Vista how does it show in my network sharing? As wireless or dial up or how???? I have never gotten that far. LOL

  75. Worked perfectly once I got the Greyed out ipcc file working. In order to get it to work, don’t download a beta version as mentioned previously.
Simply to go terminal and type:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

I had to enter this twice before you get a few paragraphs worth of explanation in terminal. Once you get that, go back to itunes (no need to restart in my case) and option – restore will then open the ipcc.

Once that works, bluetooth PAN after a repairing worked perfectly, and fast I should mention!

  78. I am so happy for everyone who got the tethering to work. My MB will not let me use this file no matter where I put it. It will not let me apply it. Has anyone else had this problem? Everything is up to date.

  79. When I click on ALT & “Check For updates” (on my PC), I get a pop up saying my version is current. It is not asking me for a file to locate?

  81. Here are the Windows XP instructions that worked for me.
    • Go to the Windows Start Menu and type cmd
    • Type the following at the Command Console prompt (include the quotes): “C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
    • Hit enter (you won’t see anything happen)
    • Close the Command Console
    • Download this 52.2KB file to your Windows Desktop: http://cdn.krillr.com/ATT_US.ipcc – windows unzips it – i used firefox.
    • Connect your iPhone to your computer and start iTunes
    • Click on your iPhone in the “Devices” list in iTunes (left side)
    • Shift-click on the “Check for Update” button
    • Browse to the Windows Desktop and select the ATT_US.ipcc file and click “open”
    • iTunes will load the file
    • After the dialogue closes, sync the iPhone
    • Then on the phone, go to Settings>General>Network and Enable Internet Tethering. Note: The USB only option is very effective and saves battery life.

  86. Wow, this worked for me. I have yet to try bluetooth but I don’t know if that’s really important. My headset uses enough battery juice so I would imagine that the connection to my laptop would drain my phone in less than an hour.

  87. Finally got this to work via Bluetooth on my MacBook…The iPhone had the blue ‘Internet Tethering” at the top but not until I connected to ‘Bluetooth PAN’ in Network Preferences AND hit ‘Renew DHCP Lease’ in the ‘Advanced’ settings did I have a working 3G bluetooth connection…Very fast, too!
